Zak Sandler : Composer

Zak Sandler at the piano.

Zak’s songs have been performed at Lincoln Center, The Public Theater, and the TONY-winning Signature Theatre. His musicals have been developed at the NYC Fringe Festival and at the Kennedy Center as part of their Social Impact Program. He also writes pop songs and songs for special occasions, such as birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations (he wrote a song about proposing with an avocado pit and performed it at his wedding! And yes, he did actually propose with an avocado pit.)

Inside My Head

Inside My Head is Zak’s autobiographical one-man musical about his experience with bipolar.

An excerpt of “Inside My Head” from the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.

Polarized

Polarized is the story of Marc, a young musician who is diagnosed with bipolar, and the voices of his depression and mania – played by actors. It is a journey from denial, to anger, to shame, to acceptance, to coming to see his bipolar as a superpower. Set inside Marc’s head (portrayed as a huge electric circuit), we also see how his bipolar affects his relationships with his Dad – who initially hides his bipolar from his son – and his girlfriend, Rachel.

Staged reading of “Polarized”, performed at the Kennedy Center’s REACH space as part of its Social Impact Program.
The dramatic final love song from Polarized, performed at the Contemporary Writers’ Circle: fifth anniversary concert.

Pop Songs

A pop song about how, in a time where everything seems out of our control, we each can make a profound difference.
A theatrical song about a small-town girl from Kansas looking forward to living in a bigger world in New York City.
A theatrical love song about a quiet high school girl about the popular girl she’s in love with.
A country song about a love triangle between a guy in Alabama, a business woman who visits “for work”, and her husband back up North.
A pop song about a woman who has a crush on a married guy at her workplace.

Parodies

Zak also makes parody music videos! The below were all produced with the help of the brilliant film director and cinematographer Tyler Milliron.

A parody about smartphones to the tune of “The Wizard and I” from Wicked.
A rap parody about the Passover Story, to the tune of songs from Hamilton.
A (not-too-triggering) parody about the COVID pandemic, to the tune of “Brown Eyed Girl.”
